I have always been a "fluttergrub", this is our local Sussex dialect for "a man who enjoys working with the earth and getting into a mess."

What a great word! Where are you from? I wonder how this word came to be.

Would have replied earlier but bin searching the countryside for a neighbours lost calves today, left me fair beazled. Found them in my hayfield. Am from East Sussex down south of UK. Sussex folk were inventive lot with their language but nowadays don’t even hear the Sussex accent but rarely, only on market-day. Before tarmac this was an isolated area due to the mud, for which there are loads of names and I will do a post of.. The entymology of several words comes from French, perhaps due to Napoleonic prisoners of war, such as sushy for dried earth, from the french seche I guess. Now I am going off “soodling” ( a slow meandering walk,as I am lapsy, before tea., its middling sushy, proper chockly, soas I wont be leaving any spannelling on the floor when I get back

So much happens in us when our hands are the dirt, I try to make this happen every day now, including growing my veggies a few kilometres from Sydney’s CBD. I love that you reminds us that we all come from traditions where to be human is to be multi skilled and creative in daily life. So much to be gained through reclaiming this. Thank you 💚🌱

Good on ya, mate:) There is so much to learn from your country. So much! I was very fortunate to get to spend a few months on a bit of a walk about with some elders near Alice Springs many years ago. It shattered me and forced me to reorient my inner compass. You are very fortunate to be surrounded by such rich culture and red earth... P.S. My wife and I were listening to Xavier Rudds new track today! LEGENDARY! Thanks for sharing, Sally. All blessings...

You were very fortunate indeed to have this experience, not surprised to hear the effect it had on you. My immersion has been a gentler slower one but just as life changing. Fortunate indeed! Great to hear you are grooving to Xavier, blessings in return

I think about this often as well. How strange to live in this modernity so disconnected from our true needs. The way we crave things that are actually irrelevant but think they will bring us happiness when all we need to do is get back to the dirt. Thanks for writing this 🙏☀️

As my kiddo often reminds me.... "Dirt don't hurt!" :) I think we are all going to be ok. Thanks for all you bring to the world, Johanna....
