Hello friends. Happy Solstice to all of you. I hope everyone is feeling loved and finding ways to love those around you. My family is currently visiting me from the States and we are enjoying some much over-do catching up time. Yesterday we planted many flowers together, made ornaments to place on the little pine tree we managed to find at a nearby orchid shop and it is, well, beginning to feel a lot like Christmas. A rare thing indeed in South East Asia!
What a blessing to be together with family and loved ones, and in peace. So many in the world now of course are not so lucky. We think of them all now and do our best to radiate metta (loving kindness) and aspire to be more kind to all beings, to be more forgiving and recommit our efforts to learn more about empathy and wisdom than war.
Too much of our time is spent filling our heads with fear. Instead of thumbing through the doomsday feed the other night, I opted instead to watch a cute little animated film with my daughter and gramma and grampa that retold the classic tale of finding a “Christmas miracle”, one that could help revitalize a lost belief in magic. The world is indeed suffering now from a tragic inability to believe in the impossible. We see our world caving in on itself but we are losing our ability to believe we can do better. It makes me wonder, what if, like in the movie, one of Santas little elves could kindly fly down the chimney and offer us a little fairy dust to soften our views such that we might be able to again see the unseen and muster up the courage to regenerate hope for a more beautiful world?
My mom yesterday, after joining a cascading talk regarding myth and ethnobotany I offered a group of Taiwanese friends visiting our farm, asked me how I think I came to view the world in the curious way in which I do now. Evidently I’ve changed a lot since we last lived together in Illinois some 20 or so years ago! I thought about it. A lot of it has to do with luck I presume, heaps of chaos and chance. It is indeed rather peculiar how the son of Salvation Army officers managed to escape the confines of suburbs, Fox News and GMO cornfields to eventually marry into wildly different landscapes. I was fortunate to have a handful of friendly, dedicated and open-minded teachers early on as well as some especially colorful friends. Additionally, my parents made sure we traveled somewhere new every year which offered me wider perspectives. But the deepest, view-shattering insight presented itself to me at a PHISH concert I attended in Madison, Wisconsin one dark and stormy night in the form of a tiny piece of paper.
One trip was all it took.
I don’t write much about psychedelics on here. I find short cuts aren’t generally the best option and I make no claims to be an expert on the subject (*Please consider following my old friend Simon Yugler’s excellent Substack, Depth Medicine, along with his new book, Psychedelics and the Soul: A Mythic Guide to Psychedelic Healing, Depth Psychology, and Cultural Repair for further insights into this realm). Too be honest, much of the psychedelic renaissance we are experiencing now deeply troubles me. Yet out of respect for my mothers gentle probing into how I veered so far off course, I felt the need to honor the mysterious origins of differing view. And it seems fitting that, upon recognizing recently that Santa’s most probable origin story likely has more to do with amanita muscaria mushrooms than anything pertaining to baby Jesus that on this day, the winter solstice to be precise, I learned that the 86 year coverup regarding how to make LSD has miraculously just ended. A legendary elf by the name of Willy Myco has managed to lift the veil, just in time for the Holidays. A Christmas miracle? Time will tell.

As regular readers of Hiraeth know, I don’t advocate for everything I write about here. What I do is simply observe, feel, experience and share in a effort to keep alive narratives that are deliberately being silenced and hopefully inspire further conversations. As such, as always, reader beware. My intent is not for you to always agree with me or do as I do. Although I can see the benefit in all ways of wisdom acquisition, this does not mean I feel each way is intended for everyone, nor that all paths are even safe. This is certainly true in regards to the use of mind-altering entheogens. Yet, In a world where one can easily learn how to make weapons online, it seems far more beneficial for people to learn how to open their minds and heal than to learn how to make weapons and harm others.
Years ago, when I was but a wee lad attempting to make since of the strange and sterile world of modern ‘merica, nothing, NOTHING enabled me to see more deeply into the infinitely unfolding nature of reality than Lysergic Acid Diethylamide. It was a raft that took me to the other shore. And once I got to that shore, I abandoned the raft. I have not used psychedelics in many years and it seems unlikely that I ever will again. But I remember that raft, and am deeply grateful for how it helped me.
Do your homework kids. If you are drowning in a sea of negative thought and cant manage to stop the maddening narrative of modernities pathetically limiting view, there are options. Maybe even tiny little elves that are willing to help. If curious, there are lots of excellent resources out there now. The game has certainly changed since I was a young buck. Excellent professional guides can now easily be found. Most importantly, be mindful of your “set and setting”. Michael Pollan’s fantastic book, “How to Change Your Mind” is a great place to begin your journey.
Tread lightly dear friends, and with great care. Don’t be stupid, be wise. Go far, stay long, see deep. Be kind and welcome the return of The Light.
Happy Solstice!
Have an excellent trip.

Greetings.
I personally have no first hand insight into the matter of "self discovery" via "tripping" however I'm all for obtaining a deeper consciousness and awareness of my present situation. I like what you said " I don’t advocate for everything I write about here" it's definitely good to be clear about that also it absolves you from any potential unforeseen events. LOL. I didn't click on any of the links yet, perhaps later today. I'm over in the US of A where we are currently under an alien invasion. LOL. Anyhow I enjoyed what you wrote. I will definitely try to become a paid subscriber when I get some money. I'm going to pass your article along to a few friends.
Thank you
